General Preparation

Before you start opening your bag of tilers adhesives Bald Hills, there are some preparations to undertake. For example, your substrates must be clean, strong, and flat. Here are some more general preparations:

·         Full Coverage. It is important to have a full spread of adhesive between the substrate and the tiles to avoid any voids, which can cause cracks later on. To ensure even coverage, try back buttering the tile with adhesives. This process is particularly useful with bigger floor tiles. It is not a good idea to apply a dab of adhesive to every corner as a way to spot-fix the area.

·         Flat. Surely, you do not want to install tiles on an uneven floor. You will have some difficulty leveling the floor and you will just find yourself wasting your tiling adhesive. Check your substrate for flatness by using a 2m straight edge. If you get more than 3mm deviations, try to pour a coat of self-leveller to make the surface even.

·         Curing. Allow the tilers adhesives to cure completely before you walk on your floor. This prevents making your floor uneven brought on by the pressure that shifts your tile slightly. This is because it can weaken the bond of the adhesive. This also applies to under floor heating systems, in which you must wait for about 2 weeks after the installation of tiles.

·         Strength. On top of the weight of your tiles, it is ideal to give 2 – 4 kg per square meter of allowance for the grout and adhesive. However, the weight may vary, so it is better to fix wall tiles to tile backing boards or unplastered walls.

Types of Tile Adhesives

The two main types of adhesives used for tiles are powdered adhesives and ready-mixed pastes.

·         Ready-mixed pastes are easy-to-use as they can be applied directly from the tub. But using ready mixed pastes comes with some limitations. They are typically used to fix only smaller ceramic tiles to walls.

·         Powdered adhesives take a little more effort and time, as you need to mix them with water into a semi-liquid mixture. But, they give a much stronger bond than ready-mixed pastes. They are perfect for bonding natural stone tiles, ceramic, or porcelain.

There are many powdered adhesives in the market with different characteristics. Pick the right option according to your tiling project.
